Outstanding researchers, who strongly contributed to Russian medical science - professors V. A. Chepurin, M. S. Makarov, I. M. Sobol, M. B. Rafalovich, A. Y. Dorscht, N. M. Pavlov and many more-were among the Founding Fathers of the Academy. And still, the higly skilled researh and teaching professionals are in the pride of our hearts. Academy has 66 chairs where more than 50 Scince Doctors, 152 readers, 274 Science Candidates and 180 qualified teachers work. Of the whole number of teachers, 20 are members of different international academies and Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, 28 are the Honored Physicians of the Russian Federation, 2 - Honored Scientists of the Russian Federation, and 2 - the Honored High School Workers.

Our graduates are the trademarks of the Academy. They are highly skilled professionals who work in different places of our country, often being in charge of Research Institutes, faculties, and chairs. More than 20000 physicians graduated from the Academy.

These days it has 3 faculties - general, pediatric and dentist, with 2700 students from Russia. Since 1961, more than 700 physicians, residents and fellows from 51 countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America graduated. Many of them became leading figures in their countries' health care. Now there are 300 foreign students from 27 countries. Teaching is made according to curricula, specially designed and approved by the Russian Ministry of Health. Academy's national rating in terms of foreign students' education quality is 11. It is among the 12 medical schools in Russia accepted by the Indian Medical Council.

The Post-Diploma Education Faculty is one of the largest in Russia and has a set of unique departments. Up to 2000 physicians and nurses annually refresh their skills in 16 specialties. The Faculty also trains nursery school teachers from all over the country.

High creative potential of the teaching personnel, modern laboratory equipment allows to perform meaningful research projects, capable of affecting not only the Stavropol health system, but also the whole country's. Many times the results of the research projects running in the Academy were presented all over Russia and abroad and were widely acknowledged. Our professors' names were included into the "List of 100 Leading World Scientists" and the "Who's Who in the World Science".

In 1993 a dissertation council was opened up in the Academy. Most every month, public dissertation "defenses" take place.

From the very first steps on the road to medical profession, the students begin to participate in different research projects. They work within the "Students' and Young Researchers' Science Society", showing their results at annual conferences. Their best works often won different prizes in all-Russia and international students' forums.

Stavropol State medical academy has four teaching buildinhs, dentistry outpatient department, and clinics of eye microsurgery, borderline psychic disorders, and vertebroneurology. All the clinical departments are located in the regional and city hospitals and equipped with modern diagnostic and treatment technologies.

In the Academy, all the conditions necessary for successful acquiring medical knowledge are present. The students individually perform laboratory and clinical tests, take advantage of modern learning technologies. With transition to the general practitioners' training, they spend more time in the outpatient's depts, where they get acquainted with the health care organization, see patients, learn emergency medicine, assist in various diagnostic procedures. Of special teaching importance are clinical rounds, patients' follow-ups, case histories writing with subsequent analysis. All this is intended to form diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation skills. A great role in the improvement of physicians teachitg quality plays the post-diploma training -the fellowship programs, due to which graduates can critically improve their theoretical and practical skills.

The scientific and methodical levels of all kinds of classes improve constantly. The Academy has the inter-department computer classes with their power increasing gradually. In order to have access to the world medical knowledge, our leading scienticts are connected to the Internet. The Academy has its own publishing facility to dispatch new teaching and methodical material.

The Academy has a specialized scientific library, with more than 320000 books and magazines on shelves. The library offers all the services necessary for teaching and research.

More than half of the students (1827) live in four dormitories.

In 1996, the Academy finished construction of a big physical training facility with swimming pool, gym and training apparatus halls, solarium, sauna, massage and physician control rooms. This could help not only to give classes in physical culture, but also to organize recreational activities for students and employees.

Academy has its own sanatorium, with more than 900 people resting annually, and a sport recreational camp on the Black Sea shore.
